WEDDING CAKE HOUSE, KENNEBUNK, MAINE
The Wedding Cake House may look Gothic but it is really an austere brick Federal style house built in 1826 by a local shipbuilder. After a fire in 1852, shipbuilder George Washington Bourne began to “frost” his house in the style of Milan’s Gothic Cathedral, for his new bride, Jane. He worked with hand tools for years, completing it before his death.
By the end of the 19th century it was known simply as The Wedding Cake House and today is one of the most photographed Gothic Revival buildings in the United States although not technically. |
